Locum & contract

medical imaging recruitment

The right person, on site, when you need them.

Gaps in medical imaging can't wait. Whether you need a locum sonographer for next week or a contract radiographer for a six-month project, we move fast — without cutting corners.

Our established networks across every imaging modality mean we can place experienced, credentialed professionals quickly, keeping your service running and your patients cared for.

Why imaging sites use contract & locum staff

Cover at short notice — backfill unplanned leave, sick cover or sudden vacancy without disrupting patient flow.

Trial before you commit — assess a candidate's fit in your department before offering a permanent role.

Project & volume support — scale up for mobile scanning, site expansion, or a backlog clearance without permanent headcount.

Specialist modality skills — access niche expertise in MRI, nuclear medicine, PET-CT or interventional radiology that may not exist in your existing team.

Cost and compliance certainty — clear engagement terms, managed payroll and no surprises.

A locum network built for medical imaging

Most recruitment agencies treat imaging as a sub-speciality. We don't — it's all we do. That means our locum and contract pool is deep, pre-vetted, and specific: radiographers, sonographers, nuclear medicine technologists, MRI specialists, and more.

When you call us, we're not searching from scratch. We already know who's available, credentialed, and ready to work.

FAQs

The questions we're asked most about contract and locum cover for radiographers, sonographers and specialist imaging roles.

How quickly can you place a locum radiographer or sonographer when we have an urgent gap?

Speed depends on modality, location, and how much notice we have — and we'd rather be straight with you than over-promise. For general radiographers and sonographers, we work to present compliant, clinically matched candidates as quickly as our active network allows. Specialist modalities — MRI, nuclear medicine, CT — take longer given the smaller candidate pool. What we can commit to is a prompt response, transparent communication on availability, and never putting forward a candidate who hasn't been assessed for your specific setting. The more lead time you can give us, the better the outcome — but we understand imaging gaps don't always arrive with notice.

How do you ensure locum imaging candidates hold current AHPRA registration, ASAR accreditation and state radiation licences before they start?

Compliance verification is completed before any candidate is presented — not after. The requirements vary by role: diagnostic radiographers must hold current MRPBA registration via AHPRA and a valid state-based radiation use licence, which is issued separately by each state and territory. Sonographers require current ASAR accreditation rather than AHPRA registration, unless working in dual-modality roles that include radiography. All candidates must also hold appropriate professional indemnity insurance. We understand these distinctions in detail — including the differences between NSW, VIC, QLD and WA radiation licensing requirements — and verify each compliance layer for every locum before placement.

Can you source locum cover for specialist modalities like MRI, nuclear medicine and sonography — not just general radiography?

Yes — and this is where specialist locum recruitment makes the biggest difference. General radiographer locums are more readily available; MRI radiographers, nuclear medicine technologists, and specialist sonographers covering obstetric, vascular or MSK work are significantly harder to source at short notice. We focus exclusively on medical imaging, which means our locum network is built around the modalities that matter — including the specialist roles that generalist agencies consistently struggle to fill. Rural and regional cover for specialist modalities is also possible, particularly for nuclear medicine and MRI where local supply is most acute. If you've been told a specialist locum isn't available, it's worth asking us.

What are typical locum rates for radiographers, sonographers and MRI specialists in Australia right now?

Locum rates in medical imaging vary by modality, location, experience, and engagement length — and have risen considerably over the past few years in line with workforce shortages. As a general guide, general radiographer locum rates currently sit in the range of $75–$105 per hour, sonographers $90–$130 per hour depending on subspecialty, and MRI-specialist radiographers at the higher end given current demand. Regional and rural placements typically attract loading on top of base rates, plus travel and accommodation. We provide transparent rate guidance specific to your role and location before any engagement begins — and we're happy to talk through what a realistic budget looks like before you commit to anything.

Can a locum placement convert to a permanent hire, and how does that work?

Yes, and it's a pathway we actively support. A locum engagement is often the most effective way to assess fit before committing to a permanent hire — particularly for specialist roles where the candidate pool is small and getting the hire right matters. If a locum works well in your setting and wants to stay, we can facilitate a permanent conversion. Conversion terms are agreed upfront so there are no surprises later. Some employers use a short-term locum block specifically as a structured trial, and we're comfortable structuring engagements with that outcome in mind from the start.
