Adelaide's public sector is paying a 10% bonus to fill sonographer roles

23 August 2026

Adelaide is one of the most affordable mainland capitals for sonographers — but most candidates reading the headline salary figures are missing the detail that changes the calculation entirely.

SA Health is currently advertising a 10% Attraction and Retention Bonus on top of base salary across multiple sonographer roles, including at the Women's and Children's Hospital, the Lyell McEwin and the Royal Adelaide. On the current AHP-3 top increment of $120,284, that addition is worth roughly $12,000 a year. Employers do not advertise retention bonuses in markets where roles fill easily.

Here are five things about the Adelaide sonography market in 2026 that are worth understanding before you make a decision.

1. The public sector is paying a bonus that doesn't appear in the enterprise agreement

The 10% Attraction and Retention Bonus sits on top of the SA Health AHP-3 band — currently $112,139 to $120,284 — but it is not written into the enterprise agreement itself. It appears in job advertisements only, which means it is an employer recruitment measure rather than an award entitlement. That matters: it could be time-limited, site-specific, or conditional in ways the advertisements do not spell out. The guide covers exactly what to ask before relying on it in a package calculation. What it signals unambiguously is that the market cannot fill these roles without it.

2. South Australia has the longest pay certainty runway of any state

The Allied Health Professionals, Assistants and Psychologists Enterprise Agreement 2025 was approved on 11 August 2025 and nominally expires 11 August 2029 — with all four pay increases already scheduled on the first full pay period on or after 1 May in 2025, 2026, 2027 and 2028. That is a total nominal increase of 13.5% across the life of the agreement. For contrast, Queensland's HPDO4 nominally expired in October 2025 with a successor still unsettled, and the NT public sector agreement is also past expiry and under renegotiation. In South Australia you can see every pay increase between now and 2029 before you sign. 3. Adelaide's median unit rent is the second lowest of any Australian capital

On Domain's June 2026 quarter data, Adelaide's median weekly unit rent is $550 — against Sydney's $780, Brisbane's $660, and Melbourne's $600. Only Hobart is cheaper. Against Sydney alone, that is a gap of $230 a week, or roughly $12,000 a year. The headline salary difference between an AHP-3 Adelaide package plus the 10% bonus and Sydney's $148,875 advertised average is considerably narrower once that rent differential is applied. Adelaide is routinely underrated because candidates compare gross salaries without adjusting for what it costs to live there.

4. Private employers in Adelaide do not advertise rates — which means you negotiate blind unless you prepare

Of every private Adelaide role captured for this guide — Jones Radiology, Benson Radiology, Lumus Imaging, Light Radiology, Repromed — not one advertised a salary or hourly rate. That is a consistent local market convention rather than an oversight. In practice it means you will usually be the first party to name a number, and the anchor you set matters. The guide covers what the national benchmarks suggest for each modality and experience level so you go into those conversations with evidence rather than guesswork.

5. The SAMI candidate pool is the mechanism most candidates overlook

Sonographer recruitment across SA Health's three metropolitan Local Health Networks runs through Statewide SA Medical Imaging, which maintains a rolling SAMI Allied Health Professional candidate pool — a standing pipeline rather than a series of one-off vacancies. In a market with 13 live SEEK roles against Sydney's 166, applying to the pool rather than waiting for a specific site vacancy is the mechanism that gives you access to movement before it becomes publicly advertised. The guide maps both channels — public and private — employer by employer.

The Adelaide market in 2026 is not the right choice for everyone. Vacancy volume is low, subspecialty depth is narrower than Melbourne or Sydney, and the 10% bonus carries a caveat. But for an experienced generalist sonographer who values a settled agreement, a short commute and low housing costs — and who knows how to prepare for a private negotiation — it is considerably more interesting than the headline figures suggest.
